About Dr. Brooke Jackson, FAAD

Dr. Brooke Jackson, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist, dermatologic surgeon, and healthy skin advocate. Her practice philosophy focuses on patient education with a holistic approach to overall skin wellness.

A graduate of Wellesley College and Georgetown University medical school, Dr. Jackson completed her internship at the University of Chicago and dermatology residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She was honored to become the first African-American dermatologist to be awarded prestigious laser fellowship training at Harvard University where her interests and research helped to pioneer the use of lasers in the skin of color. She pursued a second fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery in Houston before founding the Mohs surgery unit at MD Anderson Cancer center. She held faculty teaching positions at Harvard, Northwestern, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and UNC prior to opening her private practice, Skin Wellness Dermatology Associates ( SWDA) in Durham, NC in 2016. Here she offers aesthetic, medical, and surgical dermatology services using innovative and customized treatment plans. With her direct, no-nonsense approach she coaches her patients through their treatment journey toward healthier skin.

 Dr. Jackson has published numerous articles, book chapters, and books relevant to her specialty. Additionally, she has authored two books Child of mine: caring for the skin and hair of your adopted child and Amazon best seller- Skin Care for Runners. Because of her research interests and training, Dr. Jackson is considered a key opinion thought leader /expert in her field and lectures nationally and internationally on the use of lasers and cosmetic procedures in the skin of color. In addition to laser surgery, Dr. Jackson’s clinical interests and expertise include skin cancer prevention and overall skin wellness.

 A gifted communicator, Dr. Jackson has made frequent guest appearances on ABC, NBC, FOX, and WGN news regarding dermatologic issues and has been quoted in numerous national media outlets including Self, O Magazine, Runner’s World, Essence, Ebony, Women’s Day, Ladies Home Journal, Parenting, Teen Vogue, Fitness magazines and was featured in a Dove commercial in 2022.

 An avid runner and budding triathlete, Dr. Jackson has completed 10 marathons ( 26.2 miles),  8 triathlons and served on the board of directors of Girls on the Run, an organization that encourages girls aged 8-12 to build self-esteem through running. While living in Chicago, she founded Chicago Fit, a marathon training group on the south side of Chicago as a way to motivate the couch potato to become a marathon finisher. Her group had over 400 members who successfully completed the Chicago marathon. She is a frequent speaker for running groups on sun safety and skin cancer awareness and in 2022 developed a skincare line JOYLAskin.com to support the everyday athlete. Married with three children, Dr. Jackson enjoys cooking plant-based meals and spending time outdoors with sunscreen on!
